<image:title>Mentors - Julia Upton - My clinical and research interests are food allergy treatments including desensitization therapies, allergy diagnostics, and advancing the recognition and treatment of immunodeficiencies. I earned a B.Sc. from Queen’s University before proceeding to Western University for an Honours diploma and MD, then residency at McMaster University, a fellowship in Clinical Immunology and Allergy at the University of Toronto, and an MPH from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. Clinical trials are revealing new ways to reshape the immune system, paving the path for better prevention and management of many diseases. My hope is for every child to live their healthiest life, and I’m passionate about mentoring the next generation of pediatric researchers to help make that possible. Outside of work, I cherish time with my wonderful family and find joy in travel and comedy.</image:title>

<image:title>Mentors - Joseph Ting - I am a baby doctor (Paediatrician/ Neonatologist) and clinical researcher focused on improving outcomes for newborns through evidence-based care, collaborative research, and education. Clinically, I care for some of the most vulnerable infants, including those born at the edge of viability, or with complex medical or surgical needs requiring multidisciplinary support. My research interests centre on neonatal infections and antimicrobial stewardship, neonatal haemodynamics (targeted neonatal echocardiography), and the long-term health of at-risk babies. To date, I’ve published over 150 peer-reviewed papers, more than 100 conference abstracts, and contributed to three book chapters. Nationally, I serve on the Executive Committee and Annual Report Review Committee of the Canadian Neonatal Network, and Associate Director of the Evidence-Based Practice for Improving Quality (EPIQ) initiative, which supports Canadian neonatal units in implementing data-driven, evidence-informed practice changes to improve outcomes for hospitalised newborns. Over the coming decade, I aim to improve newborn care nationally and globally through research, education, and system-level change. Outside work, I am a keen reader, particularly of history, literature, and political science.</image:title>

Also adept at new technologies, ask me how the metaverse can promote the development of diverse and authentic partnerships, and I will invite you to join a dynamic virtual community of practice. I like to add color to discussions with my French Canadian accent and my candid reflections. Before becoming the primary caregiver for my son Liam, who lives with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA type 1), I worked in the media industry where I ran a creative agency. With other great parents, I co-founded the Quebec chapter of Cure SMA. I never miss an opportunity to be involved and collaborate to improve patient voice. Over the past decade, my family has witnessed the evolution of medical care. We closely followed the initial clinical trials, their approval, and the intricate negotiations that led to the reimbursement of the first treatments. Today, our community has three reimbursed treatments available. The neonatal screening, enables all Canadian children to receive treatment before the onset of symptoms. These achievements are the result of intense collaboration among all stakeholders. Nevertheless, access to products and services that meet Liam's health, education, and cultural needs remains a challenging journey. These obstacles are often encountered by individuals living with complex medical conditions. Consequently, I continue to advocate within institutions and organizations at various levels of jurisdiction for better support and partnership between all stakeholders.</image:title>

I have benefitted both from participating in pediatric and adult clinical trials and collaborating with trialists as a patient partner. I'm especially interested in advancing youth and family engagement in areas of research where it is in its early stages, such as reporting guidelines. I'm proud to say that I've collaborated with research teams and patient groups to advise on co-developing 6 pediatric core outcome sets. In June 2023 I was appointed Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto Dalla Lana School of Public Health, a recognition of the expertise I have acquired in patient engagement as a person with lived experience. <image:title>Mentors - Fabiana Bacchini - Fabiana is the parent of a surviving twin born prematurely at 26 weeks, leaving a lasting impact of cerebral palsy. But instead of allowing adversity to hold her back, Fabiana turned her personal journey into a mission to transform the landscape of care for preterm babies and their families. While her son fought in the NICU, Fabiana participated in the Family Integrated Care research study. Inspired by the power of this model, she became an ambassador of FICare. Her passion for knowledge mobilization ignited, and she vowed to bridge the gap between scientific inquiry and practical application, particularly for the well-being of preterm infants and their families. Drawing from her background as a broadcast journalist, Fabiana combines storytelling to empower others. Her life coaching training adds a unique dimension to her work, providing support to those she collaborates with. But Fabiana's passion for life extends beyond the realm of research. With a zest for adventure, she has lived in four different countries, immersing herself in diverse cultures. You can often find her indulging in film festivals and exploring global cuisine. Fabiana's journey exemplifies resilience, compassion, and the unwavering pursuit of transforming research into meaningful change. As a voice for the NICU babies and their families, she strives to create a world where every premature baby receives the care and support they deserve.</image:title>

      <image:title>Mentors - Lianne Tomfohr</image:title>
<image:caption>My name is Lianne Tomfohr-Madsen, I have over 15 years of experience centered on understanding the impact of social and structural risk factors on mental and physical health and nearly a decade doing research on prevention of mental health problems. I am an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Prior to joining UBC, I was an Associate Professor and the former Director of Clinical Training in the CPA-Accredited Clinical Psychology program at the University of Calgary. From 2013-2019, I held a Professorship in Child Health Psychology at the Alberta Children's Hospital and I was supported by a Career Development Award from the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program (CCHCSP) and Early Career Investigator Award from the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR). I received my BA in psychology from the UBC and my PhD from the SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology with a focus in Behavioural Medicine. My program of research is focused on the psychological and social factors that promote or detract from optimal health trajectories. The transition to parenthood is a time of increased risk for development or worsening of mental health problems. My intervention research seeks to address patient-oriented research priorities related to the development, testing and dissemination of prevention and intervention programs that will improve both parental and child mental health. My current program of research has been profoundly influenced by my own role as a mother, my clinical work with families transitioning to parenthood and a personal dedication to addressing socially influenced risk factors for poor mental and health. I am deeply invested in service at the departmental, provincial, and national level that focus on addressing deep seated inequities in psychological training and care and that aim to provide equitable access to culturally competent mental health services. <image:title>Mentors - Ron Thomson</image:title>
<image:caption>Ron is a relative newcomer to the Canadian child health landscape. Since his son Samuel was born with severe Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) in 2019, he and his wife have been navigating a health care system that has a limited understanding of neonatal brain injury. Ron desires to serve the sector as an advocate for scientific advances in the understanding and treatment of all pediatric conditions, but especially those that are underrepresented in the literature. He believes that all sick children should receive equal support in reaching their maximum potential, regardless of their diagnosis. Ron is also a speech scientist and professor of applied linguistics at Brock university, where he conducts research investigating the development of second language speech perception and production. Ron's formative childhood years were spent, first, with the Siksiká First Nation (Alberta), and later, living in Pakistan. These diverse experiences, which included exposure to the suffering of marginalized populations, significantly influence his worldview. Research Discipline: Social Sciences Research</image:caption>

Infections are often a reason for children to become critically ill, and often occur in the critically ill child. My research focuses upon stemming this burden through optimizing their management in a variety of settings. Additionally, the ability of various settings and healthcare systems to cost-effectively manage critically ill children, especially those with infection, is an area of focus.
