Dr. Brenda Law is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta and a neonatologist at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. She completed her Bachelor of Engineering degree in electrical engineering from the University of Victoria (Victoria, BC), her Doctor of Medicine at Queen’s University (Kingston, ON) and her Master of Science in Pediatric Science at University of Alberta (Edmonton AB). She completed her Pediatrics residency at BC Children’s Hospital and her fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and Clinician Investigator Program at the University of Alberta.

Dr. Law’s research interests are in neonatal clinical trials and in human factors and ergonomics in neonatal resuscitation. The philosophy of human factors optimization can be summed up as: “When we look at a task or process, how can we make it easier for humans to do the right thing, and harder for us to do the wrong thing?” She is interested in examining new ways of providing effective neonatal resuscitation for both term and preterm infants from both a medical science as well as a human factors / healthcare professionals perspective. She is also interested in optimizing neonatal resuscitation from as a health system. This involves examining all aspects of neonatal resuscitation, including equipment, physical spaces, healthcare provider training, teamwork and communication, hospital processes, and referral and transport to tertiary care.
