Liton Furukawa

Dr. Furukawa's career represents a convergence of rigorous scientific inquiry and a deep commitment to improving the lives of neurodiverse children. As a Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Ethics Review Officer at Royal Roads University, she works at the intersection of ethical governance and health research, ensuring the integrity of studies while safeguarding the welfare of participants. This role is underpinned by her expertise as a multisensory intervention specialist and educational psychologist, a unique combination that informs her approach to research and intervention.

Witnessing first-hand the struggles of children with disabilities and various mental health issues and their families ignited a passion for developing evidence-based solutions, and as a licensed teacher and centre director, Dr. Furukawa has helped children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Tourette Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Aphasia Childhood Language Disorder. Dr. Furukawa's work focuses on the development and empirical validation of innovative intervention models for children with special needs that harness the therapeutic potential of multimodal sensory experiences. Her interdisciplinary perspective, honed through collaborations with specialists in early childhood education, clinical pathways, and innovation, underscores her commitment to translating scientific discoveries into tangible real-world impact.

Dr. Furukawa speaks five languages fluently and has lived in ten countries. This multicultural background enriches her perspective and fuels her creativity, informing her research and artistic endeavours (calligraphy, origami, painting, and music/cello teaching). This fusion of science and art is her unique approach and has a positive impact on children and families.
