Helen McCord is a doctoral student and certified Neonatal Nurse Practitioner who works with critically ill newborns and their families in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Helen obtained her BScN at Dalhousie University and started her nursing career at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Through her clinical work, Helen developed an interest in managing pain and alleviating stress in preterm infants and their families. Helen obtained a master’s degree in Nursing at Dalhousie University focusing research on pain management in newborn infants. Helen then pursued her post-master’s Neonatal Nurse Practitioner degree at McMaster University. Helen is currently in the PhD program at Dalhousie University. Her doctoral work is supervised by Dr. Marsha Campbell-Yeo, a CIHR investigator and an internationally recognized expert in the field of neonatal pain research. Her doctoral research is focused on conducting a clinical trial on using intranasal fentanyl in preterm infants to decrease pain associated with retinopathy of prematurity examinations. It is intended that the results of this study will culminate in strategies and an overall action plan to implement evidence-based interventions that improve pain management within the neonatal population across the globe. Outside of studying and working as a Nurse Practitioner, Helen is a busy mom of boys and fur babies! She appreciates a good cup of coffee and spending time with close friends and family.
