She completed her Pediatric Respirology Fellowship and Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research at the University of Toronto. Her Master’s thesis was a randomized crossover trial to evaluate the efficacy of a positional therapy device to treat childhood positional obstructive sleep apnea, a distinct phenotype wherein airway obstruction occurs almost exclusively in supine sleep. She was a fellow in the Academic Sleep Pulmonary Integrated Research/Clinical Fellowship through the American Thoracic Society (2021-2022) as well as a trainee in the Clinician-Scientist Training Program at SickKids (2021-2023). More recently, she was the recipient of the 2024 Carole L. Marcus Outstanding Achievement Award through the American Thoracic Society for her accomplishments and potential in the area of pediatric sleep and respiratory neurobiology.

Dr. Xiao is a clinician-researcher and clinical epidemiologist with expertise in Pediatric Sleep Medicine and Home Mechanical Ventilation. Her research program holistically evaluates the full spectrum of pediatric sleep disorders including sleep-disordered breathing, sleep-related movement disorders, insomnia, and chronic respiratory failure. Using a wide range of methodologies including randomized controlled trials, qualitative methods, and observational designs, the goal of her research program is to develop and evaluate targeted interventions for pediatric sleep-disordered breathing that will promote effective, equitable, and accessible treatments for all children
